Love getting text messages more than email? You’re not alone. Most people are more likely to open texts rather than traditional marketing email. A recent study showed SMS open rates as high as 98%, compared to just 20% of all email. Think of all the unread marketing emails in your inbox. If you’re like most people, your text open rates are much higher.
Nearly 80% of Americans now own a smart phone. 68% of Millennials admit to texting “a lot” every day, along with 47% of their Gen-X counterparts. But, it’s not just the youngsters that are texting. 97% of Americans use the texting functionality on their cell phones at least once a day and all of us spend an average of 26 minutes a day texting.
SMS marketing gets an urgent response. If you want to make contact with your customers to inform them of a special offer, to remind them it’s been a while since they’ve been in or to encourage them to leave a review, the average message response is just 9 seconds. An email response may take 90 minutes or more. Text messages again get the win over email.
Not only is SMS marketing more effective, but it is also preferred by customers. 75 percent of people would rather have offers sent to them via SMS versus other means of advertising. And more than half of all consumers are happy to sign up for a loyalty program. And more than 30 percent of recipients respond to SMS offers, with texted coupons redeemed 10 times more often than traditional coupons.
Texting small and medium-sized business customers builds a full-circle relationship. Haven’t seen someone in your store for a while? Draft a message with a 2-1 coupon to bring them in. Follow up their visit with a reminder to leave a social media review. When they leave a review, incent them to come in again with another reward. It works! You can customize rewards and reward tiers and keep customers coming back for more. Texts create more opportunities for response, interaction and ROI.
